Continuing Education programs are outreach programs offered by the Institute to working professionals from industry, R&D organizations, faculty members of science, engineering and technical colleges, and entrepreneurs throughout their working/professional career. A range of short term courses, conferences, symposiums and various certificate programs, where certificates are awarded to participants upon successful completion of one or more modules, are conducted as part of such outreach programs.

Professionals engaged in different professions may take advantage of formal coursework, conferences, or seminars offered on different platforms, including online using Information and Communication Tools (ICT) or in the classroom to address their educational needs, to remain updated in their fields, learn new skills, change careers or enhance their marketability.

Similarly, executives, business leaders and managers may enroll in executive programs customized based on the requirements of companies. These help them grow or improve their businesses and organizations.

Depending on the program and course attended, participants can also earn academic credits. Recently this program has been expanded to a nation-wide Global Initiative for Academic Networks (GIAN) format by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

Award of credits are being planned for the future for modular courses which are offered under the Knowledge Dissemination Program (KDP) through extension centres at Kolkata and Bhubaneswar.

Apart from that certificate programs are initiated in collaboration with other Academic Institutes and Industry.

Teaching faculty members already possessing a graduate/post graduate degree may take admission to M.Tech and Ph.D programs to upgrade their academic qualifications and expand their knowledge base. This is primarily done through Quality Improvement Programs (QIP) sponsored by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Government of India coordinated by the Continuous Education Office IIT Kharagpur.

The other initiative includes the SWAYAM NPTEL which is the largest online repository in the world of courses in engineering, basic sciences and selected humanities and social sciences subjects. NPTEL is a project of MHRD initiated by seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati and Roorkee) along with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 2003, to provide quality education to anyone interested in learning from the IITs. The main goal was to create web and video courses in all major branches of engineering and physical sciences at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and management courses at the postgraduate level. The You tube channel for NPTEL is the most subscribed educational channel, 1.5 million+ channel subscribers, 819 million+ views, 50000+ Video Hours. More than 54000+ hours of video content, transcribed with subtitles and most accessed library of peer-reviewed educational content in the world.

In addition to all these all the live streaming, videography and photography of all Institute level activities namely Convocation, Foundation Day, Independence Day, Republic Day and so on are also done.
